Flagging: what is your hanky code color?

Reading time: 2 minutes

We, gays, do love our colors, and that’s what makes the rainbow flag, which is a symbol of LGBT social movement and freedom is full of colors. Colors are the way we speak, the way we showcase ourselves to the society, to show how diverse and open-minded we really are, and the crucial fact is that colors make our lives more vibrant, vivacious and productive.

Before all gay dating apps that we today have at our disposal, the handkerchief code was a movement which started back in the ’70s, when guys would mostly meet up at bars which were overcrowded, for men to faster recognize each other.

The handkerchief code or hanky code used location and color, to indicate the sexual interests, of the potential sex partners. The position of the handkerchief has its importance also, while it indicates your role. Worn in the right rear pocket, it indicates an interest in the passive, often "bottoming" position. Worn in the left pocket, it indicates a predilection for an active, usually "dominant" role.

Today this movement is not that dominant or present thanks to the evolution of the internet and social networks, but still, it holds a good way of starting a conversation, making a move, or even making a fashion statement or just playing with colors. The good all days deserve to be remembered and it was, I am certain, nice to browse live through the catalog of guys wearing bandanas while drinking beer at a bar. That was how the guys rolled then, without having Facebook, Instagram, Tumbler and all other social networks.

Bandanas are bound to make a comeback, as they hold a valuable position in gay history, and represent freedom and gay movement. If you want to know more, here is a Davey Wavey video on this topic with even more color explanations:

DISCUSSION: Which would you wear? Have you ever worn one? We want to hear from you, so tell us what you think about making bandanas a must have for this year?
